Rotation Of Political Power In Cameroon

Dr. Nfor N. Susungi
The election of Muhammadu Buhari has underscored the importance of the principle of rotation of political power in Nigeria. It happens that what is true for Nigeria is even more true for Cameroon.
One of the cardinal principles on which Reunification was built in 1961 was rotation of politial power. That was the understanding behind Ahidjo assuming the position of President in 1961 while Foncha became Vice President. For those of you who do not know, the principle is still valid and in force today.
After spending 22 years as President, Ahidjo was succeeded by Paul Biya who has spent 33 years. I hope that Cameroonians understand where political power must go after Paul Biya leaves office. The political power must remain there for at least 3 seven year terms. Unless the principle of rotation is respected, Cameroonians can expect trouble.
