Prime Minister Philemon YANG |
Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Philemon Yang backed by one hundred stalwarts
of his native Northwest province has asked President Paul Biya to hold
early presidential elections, APA can report. The motion of support and deference published Monday justified this
position by the desire to see no less than the leader of the Cameroon
People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) completing large development
projects launched over the past two years, ending the militant
insurgency in the Far North and rebellions in Central African Republic
border.
The appeal comes after similar arguments relayed by the state-owned media.
Although most of these motions of support and calls for applications
are for 2018, many observers suspect the government of taking advantage
of this favourable situation to call for the election.
Others accuse the authors of these calls, which are from government
members, elected officials and other public company CEOs, of taking the
president hostage to protect their own selfish interests.
The opposition African Movement for New Independence and Democracy
(MANIDEM) and the NGO Pan-African Patriots (CPP), in a statement issued
late last week urged Paul Biya not to listen to sycophants and instead
chart his own course to satisfy Cameroon and the international
community.
Mr. President, think about Cameroon. They only think about their
benefits and their career, we think about the country’s future. We want
to deliver you from the heavy responsibility of decline or the possible
chaos that this new application can generate, they warned.
Cameroon’s economic and social development is stalling, progress and
social justice are not on the agenda. Growing poverty in Cameroon comes
from the organized looting of our resources.
