Increase In Beer Prices

Beer prices in Cameroon have since the 16th February 2015 experienced an average 75CFA francs increase. The upsurge was made public in a joint decree signed by the Ministers of Finance and Trade on 12th February 2015.

“Is beer now 650 francs?” Many consumers wondered over this question as soon as the decision was being executed at beer parlours yesterday.
The decree is a logical follow-up to rumours of an imminent increase propagated since December 2014. Many who believed in this increase pointed to the 2015 Finance Law that saw an increase on taxes levied on beer.
At the Directorate General of Taxation, officials explain that the new prices were agreed upon after a meeting with businessmen involved in the sector and consumer associations. During the sitting, participants attempted to strike a balance between the purchasing power of consumers and profits of the brewery companies.
Accordingly, 65 centilitres of beer will witness a 75 CFA francs increase; an average 600 CFA francs and a crate 6600 CFA francs up from 5400CFA. In the same vein, a 33 centilitres bottle will be sold at 375 CFAF more.
Most Cameroonians have criticised the new measures given that beer is one of the most consumed beverages in the country.

Clinton Njie on Target Again As Lyon Restore Two-Point Lead

Olympique Lyon’s Clinton Njie (R) celebrates with his teammate Henri Bedimo after scoring against Lorient.
Olympique Lyonnais restored their two-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 standings when Clinton Njie’s late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw at Lorient on Sunday.
Cameroon striker Njie netted his second goal in as many games 12 minutes from time to put OL on 51 points from 25 games two ahead of Olympique de Marseille and Paris St German who were also held to draws at the weekend.Lorient are 16th on 28 points, two points above the danger zone after Njie cancelled out Jordan Ayew’s 50th minute goal. Lyon were far from their best in a dull first half during which they failed to create a single chance. Lorient made them pay when Ghana forward Ayew headed home from Benjamin Jeannot’s cross from the right. That spurred Lyon into action but Benjamin Lecomte denied Nabil Fekir from close range with a superb save in the 55th.

Njie equalised in the 78th minute after second-half substitute Yoann Gourcuff set up Henri Bedimo on the left flank. The Cameroon defender’s cross was met by Njie, who beat Lecomte with a low shot that was deflected off a defender.

Speech by H.E. Paul BIYA, President of the Republic of Cameroon at the opening ceremony of the Extraordinary Summit of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Council for Peace and Security in Central Africa (COPAX)

 •Heads of State and Government,
•Heads of Delegation,
•The Representative of the UN Secretary-General,
•The Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission,
•The Secretary-General of ECCAS,
•The President of the Senate,
•The President of the National Assembly,
•The Prime Minister,
•The First President of the Supreme Court,
•The Procureur General of the Supreme Court,
•Members of the Diplomatic  Corps,
•Members of Parliament,
•Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Cameroonian people, I wish you a warm welcome and pleasant stay in Yaoundé. I would like to heartily thank you for attending this summit.
Just as you desired, this summit is devoted to attacks on some of our countries by the Boko Haram terrorist sect. Your presence here testifies to the solidarity within our Organization. Above all, it also reflects our determination to implement the various decisions we have already taken against Boko Haram, a movement which, as you are aware, rebuffs the values of human life. It uses methods of blind and ruthless terrorism.
Its atrocities have already claimed thousands of lives – Muslims for the most part – and caused extensive property damage in Nigeria and in neighbouring countries.
Chad, Niger and Cameroon, and of course Nigeria, are currently at the front line, so to say. Their armed forces are bravely waging battle… Needless to point out that their battle is also the battle of our entire Organization.
I would like to pay fraternal tribute to President Idriss DEBY. With the support of the Chadian people and as a sign of solidarity, he took the courageous decision to send a large contingent of Chadian soldiers to reinforce our troops. Their bravery is well known and has been demonstrated in the latest battles.
Furthermore, Cameroon commends the decision taken by the African Union at end-January 2015.
As you know, the African Union’s Council for Peace and Security in Central Africa, at its meeting of Heads of State and Government, authorized the deployment of a 7 500-man strong Mixed Multinational Force. It also decided to convene an experts’ meeting in Yaounde from 5 to 7 February 2015 to specify the operational concept of this force. The meeting   conducted an in-depth situation analysis   and prepared the mandate of the Mixed Multinational Force.
The African Union’s decision also paves the way for referral to the Security Council with a view to adopting a resolution.
Permit me to point out, once again, that this is in no way whatsoever, a “crusade” against Islam or an episode in some kind of “clash of civilizations”.
The reality is simple.  On one side, there are our forces, defenders of a modern and tolerant society which guarantees the exercise of human rights, including that of religion, as well as representative democracy. On the other side, namely Boko Haram and similar movements, there are partisans of an obscurantist and tyrannical society which has no consideration for human dignity.
You would agree with me that these two models of society are absolutely incompatible and, hence, compromise is absolutely impossible.
Therefore, we need to put an end to the actions and activities of terrorist movements. We need to eradicate Boko Haram. By so doing, we would be able to reassure our populations and better focus on the only worthwhile struggle: the struggle against poverty and for the dignity of Africans.
Thank you.

Exceptional Measures To Intensify Security

Minister Robert NKili

The Minister of Transport has issued a communiqué to this effect calling on all and sundry to abide by the laws in force.
With the recent threats to insecurity witnessed in the country, the Minister of Transport, Robert Nkili, has taken stringent measures relating to the reinforcement of security and safety controls in every transport sector in the country. Although these measures are already operational in the air, sea and train transport sectors, measures are underway to fully implement it in road transport. Operators within the sectors are thus looking for partners through whom they will purchase the required equipment to implement the exceptional security measure.
Airport Measures
The usual control in all airports in the country has been reinforced and aviation authorities have acquired new materials to detect dangerous equipments carried by any passenger. These detectors will automatically check passengers before they enter reserved zones in the airport. Machines have also been bought to scan the luggage of all passengers so as to detect bombs or any explosive chemical that may happen during a flight The Inspector General at the Ministry of Transport, Zacharie Ngoumbe says these security measures are exceptional, reason why they will be used on every passenger, no matter his status in the society. Currently at the airport, family members who come to accompany those travelling are not allowed to enter the airport premises.
Maritime Transport
All goods passing through the Douala, Limbe or Kribi seaports must be scanned with a newly acquired big scanner. Before now, transport officers say goods use to be randomly scanned as they reached any seaport. Within the exceptional measures, all goods that pass through the seaport are individually scanned to know their content. If there is doubt on the content of any good, that good will not leave the port. Zacharie Ngoumbe says port premises are no longer market places. Defined areas have been established for people to go through while carrying out transactions around the seaport. Equally, seaports are no longer tourist zones, they are highly secured.
Railway Transportation
The Inspector General at the Ministry of Transport says the unique company involved in railway transportation in the country has acquired testing and scanning materials to check all persons using the railway. Camrail has committed itself to buy all security equipment to avoid any insecurity incident on a train that can be dangerous to passengers. Because railway travelers are not used to such security checks, Zacharie Ngoumbe says it is within this backdrop that the Minister of Transport in his communiqué called on everybody to collaborate as far as these exceptional security measures are concerned. Luggage of those using the railway system will also be scanned.
Land Transport
The registration of passengers is systematic with all passengers identified with a legal document. All luggage will not only be tagged but identified to their owners so that if there is any incident, the source can be easily traced. Parcels that are transported through such agencies will be henceforth identified by the name and contact of the sender and that of the receiver. The Minister of Transport has also reiterated that even if a driver must pick up a passenger along the road, it should be somebody he personally knows and that person should be scanned with the mobile scanning machines found in the vehicle. These security measures are applicable to everyone.

Chiefs Declare To Fight Boko Haram With Witchcraft

Traditional leaders of Ngoura are demanding permission from the Head of State, Paul BIYA, to launch a deadly mystical attack against the Boko Haram sect. The traditional rulers made this declaration recently during their gathering last Sunday in the Ngoura Sub Division of Lom and Djerem Division, East Region of Cameroon.
According to reports, these traditional chiefs have proposed to launch thunder lightning to kill all the fighters of Boko Haram. Ahmadou, the traditional group leader explains: "From our homes, we can perform traditional acts and call on thunder lightning and launch it to deal seriously with evil or guilty individuals and group of persons. But we cannot send it to some one that is innocent of evil deeds. We want to ask the Head of State to give us permission to launch thunder lightning to wipe out the members of Boko Haram".
The traditional leaders say they were demonstrating their undivided support to the Head of State of Cameroon, the national army and Cameroon as a whole in the battle against the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram.
It should also be noted that Michael S. Hoza, United State's Ambassador to Cameroon, in a press release, said he is offering the price of $7million, an equivalence of 3.5 billion francs CFA to anyone who kills Boko Haram's leader - Abubakar Shekau. This was reported by the news site Koaci.
According to the newspaper, the US Ambassador explained that this amount of money is a price tag for the head of Abubakar Shekau justified by the fact that the sect has become "synonymous with global and fanatical Islamism and barbaric terrorism".
"Apart from the physical manifestations of violence, the Nigerian jihadists also encourage moral violence, asking people to give up their identity and embrace their teachings, which are that of evil. Now, acting as a guarantor of religious truths against innocent people, Boko Haram openly recruit young people, compelling them to carry out crime against humanity while telling them that they are fighting a course for Islam. This is unforgivable," said Michael S. Hoza.

Only Virgin Students Are Allowed To Write School Exams

The Municipal Council of Jember, a town in Indonesia located in the Province of East Java, with a population of about 300.000 inhabitants, is subjecting high school girls to virginity test. Local media in the country have reported on this issue. If the control would prove positive, then they will go in for the exams, but if it is proven negative, they might not have the opportunity to sit for the end of year certificate examinations.
According to authorities, this measure is primarily intended to curb sexual relations before marriage amongst young people in the community. The data collected earlier from local hospitals showed that nearly 10% of HIV/AIDS infected patients are students particularly in the town of Jember. Habib Isa Mahdid, a member of parliament of the People’s Conscience Party in the Jakarta Globe, maintains that irresponsible sex behaviours are rampant amongst students. He explains: “The most surprising thing is that, school students have sex several times and with different partners before they complete school”. The official said virginity test were also implemented as part of the fight against pornography. Another member of parliament of the Muslim National Awakening Party, Mufti Ali, on his part says he wish to extend the measure to the entire province and only virgin–girls should sit in for end of year certificate exams. Hear Mufti: “If they are not virgins, they will not be allowed to write and pass the exam. Virginity should be a condition for obtaining the High School Certificate and this should become a regional regulation”.
