No more physics and maths, Finland to stop teaching individual subjects The future is all about learning by topic, not subject.

Finland, one of the leading educational hotspots in the world, is embarking on one of the most radical overhauls in modern education. By 2020, the country plans to phase out teaching individual subjects such as maths, chemistry and physics, and instead teach students by 'topics' or broad phenomena, so that there's no more question about "what's the point of learning this?"
What does that mean exactly? Basically, instead of having an hour of geography followed by an hour of history, students will now spend, say, two hours learning about the European Union, which covers languages, economics, history and geography. Or students who are taking a vocational course might study 'cafeteria services', which would involve learning maths, languages and communication skills, as Richard Garner reports for The Independent. So although students will still learn all the important scientific theories, they'll be finding out about them in a more applied way, which actually sounds pretty awesome.

"What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life," Pasi Silander, the Helsinki's development manager, told Garner. "Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed. We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society."
The new system also encourages different types of learning, such as interactive problem solving and collaborating among smaller groups, to help develop career-ready skills. "We really need a rethinking of education and a redesigning of our system, so it prepares our children for the future with the skills that are needed for today and tomorrow," Marjo Kyllonen, Helsinki’s education manager, who is leading the change, told Garner.
"There are schools that are teaching in the old fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginnings of the 1900s - but the needs are not the same and we need something fit for the 21st century," she added.
Individual subjects started being phased out for 16-year-olds in the country's capital of Helsinki two years ago, and 70 percent of the city's high school teachers are now trained in the new approach. Early data shows that students are already benefitting, with The Independent reporting that measurable pupil outcomes have improved since the new system was introduced. And Kyllonen's blueprint, which will be published later this month, will propose that the new system is rolled out across Finland by 2020.
Of course, there is some backlash from teachers who've spent their entire career specialising in certain subjects. But the new blueprint suggests that teachers from different backgrounds work together to come up with the new 'topic' curriculums, and will receive a pay incentive for doing so.
Finland already has one of the best education systems in the world, consistently falling near the top of the prestigious PISA rankings in maths, science and reading, and this change could very well help them stay there.

Over 150 People Killed In Plane Crash In France

Airbus A320 airliner belonging to the German airlines company, Germanwings, subsidiary of Lufthansa, crashed on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 in the French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne, BBC reported citing French aviation officials and police. The French Transport Ministry, RFI said, disclosed that 150 people were on board the plane that was reportedly en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and was carrying 144 passengers and six others were crew members. Reports say 67 of the passengers were Germans and the Spanish deputy Prime Minster said 45 of them had Spanish names.
"The conditions of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, lead us to think there are no survivors,” French President Françoise Hollande said, the BBC quoted. Transport Minister, Alain Vidalies, later on reportedly confirmed the information. President Hollande was cited as further saying that the crash was a tragedy and called for solidarity with the victims, adding that the area of the crash was very difficult to access.
The Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls reportedly sent the Minister of Interior Bernard Cazeneuve accompanied by the Minister of Ecology, Ségolène Royal and the Secretary of State for Transport, Alain Vidalies to the scene of the crash, RFI reported. Speaking later on, he said, "A helicopter managed to land (by the crash site) and has confirmed that unfortunately there were no survivors,” Reuters quoted.
"The aircraft's contact with French radar, French air traffic controllers ended at 10.53 am at an altitude of about 6,000 feet. The plane then crashed," Germanwings' Managing Director Thomas Winkelmann told a news conference,, Reuters reported. RFI cited the Spokesperson of the French Interior Ministry, Henry Brandet as saying that over 400 rescue personnel were mobilized for the incident. However, the rescue mission could not be easy owing to the difficult access to the area.
Reacting to the plane crash, the Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa, Carsten Spohr reportedly said they did not yet know what happened. He however, expressed sympathies to the families of the passengers and crew members, praying that survivors should be found.

The Eye Newspaper In The Finals of 2Degrees Champions In UK The news was made public on March 16, when the jury that examined over two million nominations published the list of this year’s finalists.

Entered in the 2degrees Champions Awards 2015
The project toured communities to announce the competition, carried out radio talk shows, oversaw the clean up campaign in villages and the planting of trees.
treeplanting

The background

The Project A Clean Community in its entirety ignited communities of Donga Mantung Division in the North West Region of Cameroon to carryout simple hygiene and sanitation so as to be free of mosquitoes, mitigate the risk of contagious diseases, plant trees and keep the environment clean. The competition kick-started last year with 34 communities participating in the cleanliness competition. This was at the heel of the outbreak of Ebola which was spreading in some African countries. Given the magnitude of the program and the level of participation by communities, the cleanest palaces (communities) were rewarded. This program if expanded to the entire North West Region, will go a long way to reduce rampant diseases linked to unhealthy environment like malaria, mitigate the spread of other airborne and waterborne diseases. Being nominated for 2degrees would enable the program to have a wider scope and contribute to sustainable actions.

What did we do

Given that the idea was part of a social communication strategy and sensitization strategy, we first toured the communities to announce the competition, carried out radio talk shows and then created a coordination unit to oversee the clean up campaign in villages (communities), and the planting of trees. When the results announced and winners were handed basic equipment (wheelbarrows, spades, cutlasses, hoes) to continue to keep their communities clean. The traditional rulers representing the various villages also received awards at a fun-filled National Award of Excellence by The Eye Newspaper in Nkambe.

The result

Financially, during this period we recorded a great increase of visitors on our weblog and increase in sales of hard copies of about 25%. But since we expected more environmental and social impact than financial. Environmentally, 32 water catchments were protected. 10.000 environmental friendly trees were planted around water catchments, 8.000 trees in sacred forests. Socially, hygiene and sanitation became a mutual issue. Each community instituted clean up campaign days and they continue to respect it right up to date as we just announced the competition for 2015. After visiting the hospital in areas like Ako and Nwa where there is rampant malaria cases due to polls of water, the number of cases reduced significantly. Money that could have been used in the treatment of malaria was used in paying either school fees for children or acquiring seed material by local farmers. Pit toilets were constructed in palaces and churches which did not have at all.

The personal pitch

This entry deserves to win due to its uniqueness and the impact that it has created within a very short time. Its is a great initiative that should be considered at this point in time that Africa is witnessing emerging diseases like Ebola.

Islam in Bambui: A New And Beautiful Mosque

Mama Nji  Youbuh is the only Bamoun who remained in Bambui after the departure of the Bamoums in 1948.
The Bamoums came to Bambui in 1935 under the leadership of Prince Musa of Foumban. Prince Musa quarreled with his brother Seidou Njimoluh Njoya over the Foumban throne. Prince Seidou overcame Prince Musa. This led to the split of the Foumban kingdom. Fon Acheyifor of Bambui received the Bamouns and settled them at Mushu Quarter with his own Palace on the Mushu Plateau.
In 1948, the Sultan of Foumban reconciled with Prince Musa and the Bamouns returned to Foumban except Mama Nji Youbuh a renowned brass worker.
They started Islam in Bambui and at present have achieved this magnificent mosque. Aladji Kadir, Ali Baba, Mama I salute all Muslims in Bambui.

Tchiroma Condemns Le Monde’s Article Which Stated that Biya Suffers Prostate Cancer

The French newspaper, Le Monde in its online edition, wrote a very unflattering article last march 13 2015 citing the reasons for which President Paul BIYA went for a private visit to Europe.
According to Le Monde’s online article, President Paul Biya was in Europe for medical attention, and was said to be suffering from prostate cancer. Mrs Chantal Biya, on her part, was said to be meeting her doctors for a check–up, after allegedly undergoing surgery in 2013 to treat cervical cancer. Le Monde in that article equally alleged that the presidential couple left Yaounde separately, and were in different countries for their medical conditions.
The online article was update three times.
The Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Government spokesperson, has not take this lying down. Speaking during a press conference, last March 16, 2015, in Yaounde, he strongly condemned the publication. Issa Tchiroma Bakary qualified Le Monde’s article as misinformation, and attempt to ruin the reputation of the presidential couple.

More Boko Haram Atrocities Discovered

About 100 bodies were found in Damasak recently recaptured from Boko Haram.
As the tides continue to turn against the terrorist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria,  the rebel group’s atrocities are more and more discovered in towns Nigerian and allied Chadian, Nigerien and Cameroonian forces have recaptured from Boko Haram.
Colonel Azem Bermandoa Agouna, a Chadian army official, BBC quoted is said to have told news agencies that he had seen "about 100 bodies spread under a bridge just outside the town of Damasak". The trading town in Borno State near Niger's border was recently recaptured  from Boko Haram by Nigerien and Chadian forces  and before leaving the town the Boko Haram fighters reportedly killed the people whose bodies were  found some of which had their
throats slit and others decapitated.
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan predicted that Boko Haram would lose all territory within a month. “They are getting weaker and weaker by the day. I'm very hopeful that it will not take us more than a month to recover the old territories,” he is quoted to have told the BBC on Friday, March 20, 2015. Military sources declared last week that  two out of three  worst-hit northeast states by Boko Haram; Yobe and Adamawa,  have been declared "cleared" while the third, Borno, is expected to be liberated "soon.” The sources disclosed that major towns such as Bama and Dikwa are among some 36 localities recently recaptured, with just three said to be still held by Boko Haram.
The offensive to recapture all Nigerian territory from Boko Haram  is pursed within the context of preparations for general elections postponed from February 14, 2015 to the coming Saturday, March 28, 2015. The war pose a serious security threat to the presidential and legislative elections. Reports say 14 candidates will be running for the presidential election though the main two rivals are incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the leading opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. The President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega has cleared organizational fears when he was quoted as saying that "everything humanly possible" has been done to ensure a free, fair, credible and peaceful vote.
